Forklift Parts in More Detail
A lift truck is made of numerous components. The main components that make up a lift truck are the frame of the truck, the engine components, the overhead guard, the tilt cylinders and the wheels. What's more, a forklift has different kinds of attachments. All the components which make up a lift truck are of equal importance since they work together to make the operation of the machinery possible. The following paragraphs describe in detail several of the lift truck components.
The Overhead Guard - this guard forms the lift truck's metal roof. It sits on top of the cab area and protects the machinery operator whilst she or he is sitting and driving. The overhead guard ensures that nothing falling from above onto the truck would hurt the driver or damage the controls in the cab. The overhead guard is integral to the frame assembly on various units.
The Mast - Mounted either to the forklift frame or the front axle, the mast is the vertical forklift part made of interlocking rails. The mast enables the forks to move up and down whilst providing lateral stability. The interlocking rails could either have rollers or bushings as guides. There are two ways the mast may be operated: chain operated with motive power provided by a hydraulic motor or hydraulically by one or more hydraulic cylinders.
Forklift Carriage - The carriage is the part which the forks and various other types of attachments are mounted to. The carriage is in fact directly attached to the hydraulic cylinder and is connected by chains. To enable the forks to be raised and lowered, the carriage may have either rollers or bushings to guide it in the interlocking mast rails.
Load Back Rest - a back rest is a metal rack that keeps a load from falling backwards when the carriage is raised to its full height. The back rest is either bolted or welded on to the carriage.
Lift Truck Attachments - There are various attachments that could be fixed directly to the lift truck's carriage. Forks are the most common kind of attachment. Moreover, there are rotators, rollers, L-shaped members, roll clamps, pole handlers and and all that. These different kinds of attachments are helpful for moving different kinds of loads.
