Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and larger refueling tanks must be stored in a different complex or building so as to be more safe. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity should have "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks must be stored in a secure enclosure which can just be accessible by authorized personnel. It is vital for the operator's safety, and everyone they work with, that these safety measures are strictly complied with.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected. This task could use retraining systems like concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be used. It is also vital to always have a fire extinguisher present at the refueling station. Furthermore, anyone who is operating the fueling station is required to be trained and also should be trained to effectively and safely operate the fire extinguisher. With regards to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The OSHA or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration require that everyone who is operating an industrial powered lift truck or forklift is trained correctly. This training includes both the hands-on training as well as the classroom portion. As soon as the training sessions have been finished, the person must be tested in order to prove that they understand the training materials. A part of this training also includes the correct method of the refueling process of the lift truck. The training also involves site-specific procedures and the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they might be driving.
Medical Treatment
There should be a Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS center situated inside the facility where the forklift is operating. This center would include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents that are used on site. This will also cover the propane which is used to refuel the unit, together with the acid in the forklift battery.
The MSDSs sheets are required to be available to all workers at all times. Like for instance, if an exposure incident happens, the individual has to be evaluated immediately. If any medical attention is required, to should be given without any delay. Normally, if you are uncertain if medical care is needed, as a general rule; have a medical doctor examine the injury if you really believe it is severe. Always better to be safe than sorry.
